Dr. Polatin was a psychiatrist, public health physician, and pain medicine specialist.
From 2007-2015 he was a senior health program consultant and manager for The Dignity Institute Against Torture, and from 2012-2015 he was a Professor of Psychiatry and Director of Global Mental Health at the George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C.
He has written extensively about issues involved in refugee mental health, torture, and chronic pain.
